An uninvited guest …

I knew better. I knew I shouldn’t be leaving food out for the feral cats that are wandering through our yard. It brought the raccoons who raided the food bowl, got dirt in the water and generally made a mess. Not to mention being a threat to the kitties.

I knew I was asking for trouble. And yesterday it arrived.

We have a regular I’ve named Three because he’s the third black cat we’ve grown fond of. The first two disappeared. Blackie was first and just when he was getting used to us he quit coming around. Bella came next. Last time I saw her she looked like she had a big abscess on her head. I suspect an infection got her. So 3rd times the charm and we named him three.

He’s been acting really spooky the last several days. Showing up late in the day instead of at dawn. Constantly jumping and looking over his shoulder. Running away from me like a shot when I open the door to set out his dish when he usually will “meow” at me from under the bench.

Yesterday afternoon I noticed him STARING at something over by the landing. As I walked toward the windows I caught sight of a yellow rump and thought “oh hell that darned yellow lab is back and scaring my cat!” Then I got a full view of this:

Needless to say I’ve been so freaked I haven’t been able to eat for over 24 hours. Not a good way to lose weight. I slept poorly and am driving Joe nuts.

Just when I thought I was calming down I decided to brave the 20 foot walk to the garage and go to town. Our driveway is about 500 feet long and we keep our trash container up by the road. It’s one of those big 90 gallon jobs like the City uses. As I got to the road I saw that part of the top bag was pulled out and SHREDDED. Not chewed. SHREDDED.

I’ve been on the phone to Game & Fish twice with still no word back. Joe says I can’t have a shotgun. I don’t know why he thinks a handgun would make me feel safer. Men. I just think he doesn’t like me going all RepubliCrat on him.
